Physical Education Homework
Fourth and fifth graders have been working on take home health assignments. Their assignment was to research and find answers on various health topics that we later discuss in class. Our first assignment was to answer the question: Why should we eat vegetables? Answers like, "because they are good for you," were not acceptable. Students were asked to find strong and meaningful answers. Students discovered that one of the reasons to eat vegetables was that vegetables are a important source of nutrients. In our second assignment students listed the six basic nutrients and we also talked about the calories that are in different foods. Lately students discovered that health experts recommend less than 1 sugar drink per day. We talked about the negative effects of sugar drinks and we looked at healthy alternates to sugar drinks.

All students have participated in a recent lesson on exercise balls. Students were instructed how to use exercise balls safely and how to get a good work out using exercise balls. Exercise balls help create circulation in the body, work on flexibility, strength and even cardiovascular endurance. Most of all exercise balls are fun, convenient and inexpensive. Balls can be purchased at most sporting good stores or online at Ball Dynamics.

After School Tennis has started for 4th and 5th graders. Students are developing the main skills needed to play beginning tennis. We are meeting next week on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Class is full.
Second graders are learning to kick a rolling ball. We are doing drills to help students develop the skill of kicking a rolling ball. We will play California Kick ball later in the year.
We are having great fall weather and P.E. classes have been going outside a lot to do soccer drills and games and hopscotch.

Fourth Graders learning to catch a football
Fourth Graders are learning to use correct hand position to catch a football. Step to the ball and catch it with your hands. Touch thumbs together when the ball is above your shoulders and turn your hands so that your pinky fingers touch if the ball is below your shoulders.
